Did You Know?
The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is dedicated to the Virgin Mary who, in answer to prayers made by the Venetian people, is said to have saved the city of Venice from the terrible Plague of 1630 which killed a third of the city's population. Built between 1631 and 1687 to architect Baldassare Longhena's design, this massive octagonal basilica combines elements of Venetian Byzantine architecture with domes inspired by St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. |
